Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the new campus of Nalanda University in Rajgir, Bihar, on June 19, 2024. During the ceremony, he unveiled a commemorative plaque and planted a sapling to mark the occasion.
The event saw the presence of several notable figures, including External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, Bihar Governor Rajendra Arlekar, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, and Deputy Chief Ministers Samrat Choudhary and Vijay Sinha. Additionally, ambassadors from 17 countries joined the celebrations at the newly established university campus.
Earlier that day, Prime Minister Modi visited the ruins of Nalanda Mahavihara, a UNESCO World Heritage site located in the Nalanda district of Bihar. These ancient ruins are the remnants of a significant monastic and scholastic institution, featuring stupas, shrines, viharas (residential and educational buildings), and exquisite artworks crafted from stucco, stone, and metal.
Nalanda is renowned as the oldest university in the Indian subcontinent.
